MC-2 "Mixing--The Tips & Tricks That Make It Easy"

Master Class-2 covers mixing style, tips and tricks. The methods are demonstrated on Pro Tools v 6.0, but translate easily to other DAW platforms and consoles both small and large, digital or analog.

"Some album projects are done completely within Pro Tools," Roger states. "Ricki Martin's 'Living La Vida Loca' was tracked, overdubbed, and completely mixed within Pro Tools. The first Billboard #1 hit to be produced completely within a DAW. Literally thousands of albums and hundreds of hits have been entirely recorded in DAWs. Hard disk recording has come a long way since Digidesign's Sound Tools in 1989 and Wendel in 1979."

"Some projects migrate around like desert nomads. Tracking is done on 24-track analog, transferred to 48-track digital tape, dumped into Pro Tools for editing, transferred back to 48-track, and mixed through an analog console. The bottom line is that every track has to sound good and fit in the mix with everything else."

Digital Audio Workstations have changed the face of recording and mixing forever, but the underlying principals of recording and mixing remain the same. By just listening to a finished product, you cannot tell where it was recorded or how it was mixed. It ultimately boils down to the song and the production. If modern tools can help you -- fine, but the new tools can also increase the magnitude of the disasters.

The chain of events during the recording process is as varied as the people involved in the process. There is no right way or wrong way to do something as long as the outcome is acceptable. This class will cover potential pitfalls that you can avoid in your quest for that elusive hit record.

During the class we will build up mixes from scratch within Pro Tools using original multi-track sessions from Grammy winning projects. We will discuss the need for compression, EQ and other effects, set the panning and relative levels of tracks and discuss level maximizing on the master fader. Mastering the final product will be covered. Can you do it yourself? SHOULD you do it yourself? What are the advantages of using a quality mastering facility over using the guy next door who has all of the same equipment?

This gives you a small taste of what gets covered in the Mixing Master Class. There is much much more that gets covered in the eight hours of intense, non-stop class. Eat plenty the day before. Although the class lunch is catered, most of the participants don't get to eat because they can't stop asking questions long enough to chew their food.
